Where is the freedom?

It all begins with an idea.

I’m tired of the hypocrisy of this nation. Taking a book inspired by God, with the biases of man fully intact, means that people who choose to love in a different way than we do are wrong or abnormal! This is the problem I have with traditional religious organizations. I believe that Jesus loved everyone, who they were, who they loved, and where they came from. People can quote the Bible verse by verse and know it backward and forward, but while I know the Bible is inspired by God and truly believe that, I also know that man's biases are intertwined within those words. I know no religious entity will ever understand, just as I know that white privilege is a real thing. I can’t believe we still live in a nation of the ‘free’ where there is this fear for the minority. It angers me so much to hear that a friend is being traumatized at work because of who they love or who they are. Because there was a possibility that they couldn’t do something important to them, the first thought of that person’s community is that it was because of who they are. I was angry, at first, at the comment, but then I was angry that they had to feel that way because it didn’t occur to me that this could be the reason, to the realization that in some circumstances, that most definitely IS the reason! Which upset me even more. To know that we live in a so-called free country and anyone who doesn’t meet standards is ridiculed, belittled, discriminated against, and we’re just to smile and take it like it is something we deserve. If we stand up for ourselves, we’re shot at or arrested. Yeah, we’re free, alright, free to sit in a 5x7 cell for indiscriminate amounts of time, used as target practice, or tossed aside or expelled because we are fighting against the norm. If this is the norm, I feel that we need to CHANGE it! I’m tired of being ridiculed because I use my voice to stand up for human rights, the basic rights that this country says it’s for! I’m just tired of hypocrisy!

I know I’ve given a lot to think about, but I still feel things in this nation must change. I couldn’t begin to know how to make these changes but maybe start with love for others no matter their circumstance, situation, love life, or what they look like. Open your heart to love each other the way we are supposed to. Not to think negatively towards others because they are different than we are. I know I struggle with negative thoughts. I go dark if someone looks at me sideways or doesn’t respond to a text/email right away. If more people could NOT do this, I feel that I could learn not to do it as well. The next thing we need to do is recognize the biases of books and texts. Even if they are ‘binary,’ they are still there whether we intend them to be or not. I don’t understand why the standards are there anymore. It’s frustrating to hear that a doctor/therapist/counselor operates from things in ‘standard of care.’ By what standard are they operating? We must reevaluate what ‘standard’ means because ‘standard' isn’t standard for everyone. If we treat everyone individually, we’d offer better care to patients and people in general. This goes for everyone, not just a select few or one or two groups, but everyone everywhere!
